The Epsom Derby is one of five classic races and probably the most well known, the other four classic races are the 1,000 & 2,000 guineas the Oaks and the St Ledger it is also the second leg of the English triple crown, the other two races for this are the 2,000 guineas and the St Ledger, the Derby is run every year at Epsom on the first saturday in June.
The Epsom Derby is for three year old horses, both colts and fillies can run in it but it is unusual for fillies to be entered for this race because the wouldn’t have much chance against the best three year old colts in the country so they normally run in the Oaks instead, the top contenders usually run in the 2,000 guineas and if they win or do well they then try for the Derby.
The Derby was first run over one mile in 1780 and is named after the 12th Earl of Derby it was won by Diomed and in 1784 the distance was increased to one and a half miles, this years Derby is set to be one of the all time classics, check out our tips page just before the race to get our tips for the Epsom Derby, Here are all the winners since the year 2000.
